Soundtrack: Eric Nam – Congratulations; in honor my second time seeing him live this weekend. Eric Nam is one of the hardest working entertainers out there and I love that he is starting to be more open about asian representation and the lack thereof that pushed him to start his career in Korea.

It turns out I am half a week late yet again but here it finally is. Enjoy.

  1. It’s fantastic to see one of my favorite Korean Indie Bands getting some attention in the US

2. President Trump Trashes Korean Oscar-Winner Parasite at Rally – Never not embarrasing.

3. “Previous research has shown that there exist “harbinger customers” who systematically purchase new products that fail (and are discontinued by retailers). This article extends this result in two ways. First, the findings document the existence of “harbinger zip codes.” If households in these zip codes adopt a new product, this is a signal that the new product will fail. Second, a series of comparisons reveal that households in harbinger zip codes make other decisions that differ from other households.” – I find this absolutely fascination.

A couple days late this week, so I hope it was worth the wait

  1. Laotian and Hmong refugees are preparing to face a possible increase in deportations, in part because the U.S. government is funding a reintegration program to help Laos accept nationals with final orders of removal. – As a resident of Minnesota, it saddens me that this may be happening to neighbors and their families.
  2. From ‘Parasite’ to BTS: Meet the Most Important Mogul in South Korean Entertainment – It is amazing to me, how much Korean culture she has influence over.
  3. A Photo Series Shows a Deserted Shanghai Caused by Fears of Coronavirus – An absolutely frightening photo series

Soundtrack: The Jim Carroll Band “People Who Died” – This showed up on a playlist I was listening to this weekend and it reminded me how much I loved this song when I was in High School, but could never find out who it was because it was the early days of the internet.

  1. Tremendous Upside Podcast with Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest) – a fascinating listen about mental health and athletes, I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the episodes
  2. In ALMOST AMERICAN GIRL, the universal language of comics connected Robin Ha to her new culture – ‘Robin’s new graphic novel is accessible, relevant, and offers a fresh and unique perspective of the challenges adolescents face as they carve out an identity in the harshest of environments: the American classroom.’
  3. Wind Turbine Blades Can’t Be Recycled, So They’re Piling Up in Landfills – ‘Built to withstand hurricane-force winds, the blades can’t easily be crushed, recycled or repurposed.’

  1. Desert Oracle Radio Podcast – high desert weirdness whether it is UFOs, demons, or anything else. this brings me joy with every episode.

2. Issue #150: Cathy Park Hong by Ken Chen – fantastic interview, and I can’t wait to read ‘Minor Feelings.’

3. This Is the Guy Who’s Taking Away the Likes – will making likes ‘private’ make instagram a better space? I tend to think yes but I’m curious if they can make it work and still deliver to stockholders.

For week two I am introducing a new feature to go with my 3 things. This week’s soundtrack. It may be something old or new but I hope you enjoy.

  1. 40 Years Later, Reggae’s Heart Still Beats in the Bronx – When I first encountered the Wackie’s label, I couldn’t believe this was coming out of NYC and not Kingston. Lloyd Barnes is an absolute legend.
  2. Rose Tico/Kelly Marie Tran was treated terribly in Rise of Skywalker – I couldn’t care less about the PR back and forth happening as to who is to blame but her reduced role was just a big win for toxic fan culture.
  3. Denver Filmmaker Explores How Korean Adoptees Felt Like ‘Martians’ In White America – ‘Even if the adoptees were too young to have memories of being separated from their lives in South Korea, and even if they land in loving families, the complicated feelings surrounding race and adoption still arise.’ As the parent of a Korean adoptee, this is something I am constantly thinking about.
